125 Year-old Business in Brattleboro Closes – Custom Laundry

No Comments 27 August 2010

Custom Laundry started in 1887, one of the oldest businesses in the state of Vermont, after being passed down though the Dunnell family. Now it is closing, after being sold to another family-owned laundry business.

Originally on Elliot Street, next to the Bushnell Block, former owner Hugh Agnew moved the laundry to 14 Church St., next to the fire station, after a fire in the Elliot Street building, in 1921.

Antique wooden beams, from a demolished covered bridge, support the current Custom Laundry & Linen building. The covered bridge spanned the Connecticut River to Hinsdale, NH.

The commercial division of Custom Laundry was bought out by People’s Linen.

After locals pick up their cleaned items, the building is to be stripped of the equipment and then the building will be sold.
